January 2021 Newsletter

Happy 2021 Print[ED] family! Our first event of the year, the Winter Professional Learning Day, will be held just over a week from now on February 3rd. It will be a slightly different format than our previous ones, only running two hours but offering TWO session options; one in the morning, 8:30 AM EST to 10:30 AM EST, and one in the evening, 4:30 PM EST to 6:30 PM EST. Same speakers, different times. This is to accommodate varying schedules and give everyone a chance to attend. See below for the schedule:

Once again this Professional Learning Day is FREE to attend!

You will also earn 2 hours of professional development! Once registered a link to the meeting will be sent to you prior to the conference on February 3rd.

90-day Free Trial of Affinity Software

Serif, the creator of Affinity Software, is offering a 90-day free trial of their page layout (Affinity Publisher), raster (Affinity Photo), and vector (Affinity Designer) programs. Serif is offering a 50% discount on these programs as well—$24.99 for each program.

Affinity software is the best alternative to Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator that we have seen, and it runs on a Mac or PC. iPad versions of Affinity Photo and Designer are also available.

The Affinity programs can be used to teach page layout, raster, and vector skills that are transferrable to Adobe products.

Complete information about the 90-day free trial can be found here.

Print[ED] Shared Resources and Forum Updates

The only way to eat the Print[ED] accreditation elephant is to take one bite at a time. The Print[ED] Professional Learning Community Discussion Forum serves up bite-size pieces related to various aspects of accreditation. When a new post is added or updated, an email will be sent with a summary of the post. When you see posts that you are unfamiliar with, take a few minutes to download the files and put them into your skeletons. Recent posts to the Forum include resources for Measuring Picas and Points including a printable line gauge, a reference book, activities, and digital instructional tools. Another post dealt with Standard 3.3 B Performance and Knowledge-based tests.

On the Print[ED] Google shared drive, examples of documentation for the Facility, Equipment, and Safety Report were uploaded to the Standards & Evaluation Guide Resources folder. Included were safety posters, safety signs, and production area signs.

If you would like to become a forum member or gain access to the shared drive please send us an email with your name, organization, and the email you would like to have associated with the forum. With this new forum and our shared drive, we hope to bring Print[ED] instructors together and grow our PLC for the benefit of all!
